Legacy Giving
One of the most exciting efforts in the field of Jewish communities across the country is the attention being given to legacy gifts also known as bequests, after-life, estate or planned giving. We are in the midst of the largest transfer of wealth in the history of the world – and those agencies who reach out to connect with their loyal donors will be better poised to receive future gifts to ensure the strength of their organization and its ability to fulfill its mission.
To help energize and train lay and professional leaders, the Institute has developed two legacy giving projects:
1. "Create a Jewish Legacy” Pilot Program for Camps and Day Schools
To motivate camps and day schools to secure legacy gifts from loyal donors, this pilot program, modeled after the ”Create a Jewish Legacy” program of the San Diego Jewish Community Foundation, was launched in January 2008 for six camps and, in collaboration with PEJE (Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education), four day schools.
2008 Participating Agencies:
Camps
- URJ Eisner and Crane Lake Camps
- JCC Maccabi Camp Kingswood
- New Jersey Y Camps
- Camp Ramah Darom
- Camp Ramah Wisconsin
- Tamarack Camps
Day Schools
- Leo Baeck Day School
- Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston
- Solomon Schechter Day School of Westchester
- Yeshivah of Flatbush
Grinspoon Institute mentors work closely with the camps and PEJE coaches work closely with the schools to develop and follow plans to discuss legacy gifts with selected alumni and donors. Camp participants in the 2-year pilot communicate regularly with the program manager and their mentors, and each camp achieving or surpassing annual goals receives a $10,000 incentive at two points in the program. Teams for all ten participating organizations convene at least twice a year.

2. ”Create a Jewish Legacy” Pilot Program for Western Massachusetts
To stimulate endowment and planned giving to support Jewish agencies, organizations, schools and synagogues in Western Massachusetts, a 2-year pilot legacy giving program was established in partnership with HGF and the Jewish Federations of Western Massachusetts and the Berkshires and the Jewish Endowment Foundation. The program was launched in June 2008 with 13 organizations. Like the parallel camp and day school pilot, “Create a Jewish Legacy” follows the San Diego Jewish Community Foundation model. The Jewish Endowment Foundation provides cash incentives of $10,000 at two points during the two year period for each of the participating organization that meets agreed-upon goals.
2008-09 Participating Agencies include:
- Jewish Federation of the Berkshires
- Jewish Federation of Western Massachusetts
