Chai Match

Overview

Chai Match is the newest matching grant program. Unlike previous matching grant programs, Chai Match is a competitive process -- only a subset of camps who apply for the program will participate.

Key Guidelines

In Phase 1 (March 18, 2011 through Oct. 18, 2011), each camp raises minimum gifts of $10,000 from donors (up to a $54,000 maximum). These gifts are matched 1:1 by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation to create a pool of matching funds of up to $108,000. Pledges must be paid in full by March 18, 2012. There is an $18,000 bonus that will be available to one participating camp (criteria to be determined).

In Phase 2 (ending March 18, 2012), the pool of matching funds of up to $108,000 is used to match 1:3 all eligible gifts of $1,800 or more. Gifts in both phases may come from new or previous donors and from individuals, families (spouse, parents, grandparents, siblings, and children), foundations, or corporations. Gifts from a Jewish Federation or the Foundation for Jewish Camp are excluded.

To be eligible for matching funds, at least one-third of each pledge must be paid within 60 days of submission of the pledge application to the Harold Grinspoon Foundation; the remaining pledge amount must be paid in full by Sept. 18, 2014.

Camps must use at least 50 percent of Chai Match funds funds for capital improvements/ facility enhancements, while the remainder is unrestricted and may be used for capital improvements, scholarships, endowments, or annual operating needs.

PLEASE NOTE: All participating camps should review the documentation requirements and program deadlines as detailed in the Chai Match Guidelines (PDF) -- as of March 25, 2011, we have eliminated the requirement for previous donors to triple their gift in order to receive a match.
